People are People

I’m guilty of it. You probably are too. We see a celebrity or someone we admire and we put them on a pedestal. They’re not perfect, we know, but they have life figured out don’t they?

It’s exciting to meet someone you admire; to meet someone you only see on TV or from afar on a stage at a concert. But at the end of the day, people are just people. These people we look up to have their own lives, their own families, their own struggles, their own fears, their own doubts, their own joys. They are just doing the best they can and learning as they go like the rest of us.

I know this but still fall into the trap of thinking these people I admire have figured out this life thing. I see them doing what they love and wonder if I’ll ever figure out what it is I am meant to do. If I am doing what I’m meant to do, it’s definitely not as fun or exciting as their lives seem.

I think part of it has to do with how much what they do or have done means to me. Maybe that is why we put them on a pedestal. What they do impacts us in a positive way. They have inspired us, challenged us, given us hope. Perhaps, what they do even gives us a timeout from our hectic, crazy lives. But they are still people.

When we can embrace that one truth fully I think we will start to live our lives with less stress. We will be able to see the beauty in our own lives; the beauty in the mundane. We will no longer have to act like we have it all together. No one has it all together.

When I remember even those I most admire are doing their best, making one decision at a time with what they know to be true at the time of their decision, it is liberating. I rest easy in the knowledge that we are all on this planet and nobody has their shit together 100% of the time.

Those we admire are just people. We are all trying to do the best with what we have. After all, people are people, even those we most admire.
